Update on the 2020 Tax Bills

  • by

The 2020 real and personal property tax bills have been sent. If you signed up to receive your bill via email, it should already be in your inbox. All other bills are sent through the United States Postal Service to your address of record.

The tax bills were delayed due to the unanticipated length of time taken by the Beaufort County Auditor to recalculate the property tax accounts. In response to and during this delay, the Beaufort County Treasurer’s Office received approval from Beaufort County Council to accept prepayments so that customers wishing to pay during calendar year 2020 could do so.

If I didn’t prepay my taxes, what do I need to know?

First and foremost, prepaying your taxes was optional so don’t worry if you didn’t prepay.

Your bill was sent by email or regular mail and you will have until March 31, 2021 to pay using any one of the payment options offered by the Treasurer’s Office. The most convenient option is myBeaufortCounty.com, where you can manage all of your tax bills and payments in one place. An added bonus: there are no additional fees when paying by check.

If you need a copy of your original bill, you can always get one using our tax bill look-up feature.

I prepaid my taxes, now what?

Thank you for prepaying your taxes and partnering with our team to make the prepayment program successful. For your records, you will still receive a bill by email or regular mail, which will reflect your prepayment or that of your mortgage company.

Most of our prepaying customers will receive a refund, which are being processed in the order payments were received, beginning first with payments made by mortgage companies. There are more refunds than usual and our team is working as quickly as possible to process them.

Although not typical, some of our prepaying customers may still have a remaining balance due. In that case, customers have until March 31, 2021 to pay using any one of the payment options offered by the Treasurer’s Office. The most convenient option is myBeaufortCounty.com, where you can manage all of your tax bills and payments in one place. An added bonus: there are no additional fees when paying by check.
